Trimaran Weta under sail.

Autumn on the Outer Banks has its own quality, it own way of being distinctive from any other season. It is the time of the year that a lot of the hardcore outdoor enthusiasts come to visit and for good reason.

We already mentioned the surf and fishing conditions, but there is something else that brings visitor to the Outer Banks in the fall—the wind.

September, October and even into November, the winds seem to be a constant, the weather stays mild and for anyone who loves kiteboarding, windsurfing, sailing or even flying a kite, this is the time to be here.

There are a number of competitions that take advantage of the winds during the fall. The Kitty Hawk Kites Stunt Kite Competition is coming up next weekend, September 12 and 13 at the Outer Bank Event Site in Nags Head. It’s a regional event and competitors come from all over the eastern seaboard.

There’s a windsurfing competition on Hatteras Island September 21-26. Part of the American Windsurfing Tour, it’s a professional event and the level of competition is outstanding.

New this year, and part of SailNC, Jon Britt at Nor’Banks Sailing is bringing the Weta Nationals to Duck September 23-26. The Weta is a trimaran that is easily disassembled and assembled making it a snap to transport.

Of course the fall is also a great time to learn about all the windsports the Outer Bank have to offer.
