Not quite two years after it burned down in April of 2019, the Christmas Mouse in Nags Head has reopened. Plenty of time to shop as well—hours though this week will be 9:00 AM – 6:00 PM. After that the store will be open 9:00 AM – 9:00.
A part of the Outer Banks since 1987, when the iconic store burned down, it was a total loss. That may, in the long run, work out for the better for the store.
Although it was a fascinating place to wander through, with what seemed like random rooms scattered throughout a large structure, the fact is, the building was never designed to be a retail store.
Originally an office building with an attached garage, it was difficult to staff and product could sometimes get hidden in forgotten corners.
The new store will look similar to the old one, but will be much more open featuring a second floor with an open design creating a much more spacious feel, but not sacrificing any retail space.
The fire began in some cardboard boxes stored by the back of the store.
Based in Williamsburg, Virginia, the Christmas Mouse has eight stores, with locations from Williamsburg to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. In addition to the Nags Head store, the smaller temporary store that opened in the Outer Banks Mall will continue to operate. There is also another Outer Banks location in Duck.
Things certainly seem to be opening up on the Outer Banks. It’s a bit chilly this week, but we’re looking forward to some better weather soon. Stores and restaurants are open, and there’s even limited seating at the movie theater. It’s a good time to visit.
