Downtown Manteo, First Friday, June 2017.
Manteo is the place to be on the first Friday of the month from April through December. The aptly named First Friday celebration is a wonderful combination of the arts, music, street food and small town life in general.
Since the June First Friday was the first of the summer, it was a little bit special with jazz bands from First Flight High School, First Flight Middle School and Manteo High School taking center stage in front of the Dare County Arts Council Gallery.
The setting was just about perfect. The weather could not have been any better, the DCAC Gallery used to be the Dare County Courthouse and with it’s classic early 20th century look, it creates a feeling that it is the center of town life.
And the music…wow! There were times it was difficult to remember that these were high school kids playing. For some of them, the seniors, this is their last hurrah playing with the school band, and maybe that added to who good it was. Whatever the magic was, there were people dancing to the music at times.
The next First Friday will be July 7; visitors who will be on the Outer Banks at that time, try to make the trip to Manteo—it will be worth it.
Also happening in Manteo this weekend is Dare Days. That will be on Saturday. The weather is looking absolutely spectacular for June 3, the musical lineup is outstanding, there’s fun and games all day…and the Blue Ribbon food contest.
This will be the 42nd Dare Days so they must be doing something right.
