First Flight High School Advanced Jazz Band performing at First Friday in Manteo.

Manteo is as pretty a little town as there is—brick building from 80, 90 or 100 years ago line the streets. Mom and pop stores and restaurants are the norm—there are no chain store conglomerates here.

There are a number of sidewalk cafes and one of them, Full Moon Cafe, even brews their own beer under the Lost Colony Brewery label.

The first Friday of every month April through October, downtown Manteo hosts “First Friday”—ok, it’s not very original as names go, but it’s always a great time. Sort of a combination mini-street fair and music and art fest.

The June First Friday is really special though. Schools are about to let out for the summer and to celebrate, jazz bands from local schools perform on the steps of the old Dare County Courthouse, now the home of the Dare County Arts Council.

All the kids played really well, but this time we have to call out the First Flight High School Advanced Jazz Band—they were outstanding tonight. The drummers especially were on fire. Tight . . . a great sound with a driving beat. A lot of fun.

Tomorrow—Saturday, it’s Dare Days in downtown Manteo. Worth checking out. Sunday it’s BrewFest at the Nags Head Soundside Event Site. Definitely worth checking out.
