Three Amigos, one of the many groups performing at Trio Bar & Bistro in Kitty Hawk this winter.

There is no doubt that things slow down considerably on the Outer Banks in the off-season. But slow down is not the same as dead and there is still some great things to do.

Live entertainment and music has always been a part of the Outer Banks scene and although there is not nearly the selection at local bars and restaurants at this time of the year as there is in the summer, there is still some great music around.

Kelly’s Outer Banks Tavern and the Outer Banks Brewing Station continue to have a few acts during the winter, but we found three smaller venues that have live music throughout the winter.

Trio Bar and Bistro

3708 N Croatan Hwy, Kitty Hawk

(252) 261-0277

Trio is an Outer Banks locals favorite place to meet for a glass of wine or a beer because they offer a huge selection of each. Lots and lots of wine by the glass and up to 30 beers on tap.

They also feature live music almost every night.

Very comfortable seating, especially upstairs. Great sandwiches and cheese plates too.

Roosters Southern Kitchen

804 S Croatan Hwy, Kill Devil Hills

(252) 441-4594

Southern food with a flair. Some of the appetizers especially are really good and very innovative. Excellent bar with a great selection of mixed drinks.

Live music is usually on Fridays and Saturdays although its worth checking their event from time to time in case the schedule changes.

Poor Richard’s Sandwich Shop

305 Queen Elizabeth Street, Manteo

(252) 473-3333

Great sandwiches on the waterfront in Manteo during the daytime with a small bar that somehow manages to squeeze a lot of people into a limited space in the evening.

Poor Richard’s has been around for over 30 years and it has a small town traditional feel to it. Worth checking out.

Live music is usually, but not always on weekends during the winter.
