It looks as though a new supermarket name will be coming to the Outer Banks. Florida based supermarket chain Publix has put the word out that it will be building a 45,000 square foot store just to the north of Lowe’s Home Improvement Center in Kill Devil Hills.
The announcement confirms rumors that have been circulating for some time that the 5-acre site at the intersection of First Street and The Bypass would be a Publix.
In September Kill Devil Hills commissioners approved a site plan for a grocery store at the location, although at that time no name was placed on the plan. A commercial site, the project did not require any zoning changes.
There will be some changes to traffic patterns at the First Street and Bypass intersection.
There is some speculation that another major supermarket chain may be coming to the Outer Banks as well. In August of this year, Mike Kelly confirmed that he is in negotiations to sell his 5-acre property that includes Kelly’s Outer Banks Tavern.
The outcome of the negotiations has not been disclosed at this time, although when he announced the negotiations, Kelly indicated December would be the likely time for an announcement.
Coming with a reputation for outstanding customer service and product selection, the new Publix will join an Outer Banks market that includes Food Lion, Harris Teeter, Walmart and The Fresh Market.
Plans call for the store to open in 2018.
