It would be hard to imagine a better day for Mother’s Day than what we have had today on the Outer Banks. Warm temperatures, nice breeze, plenty of sunshine . . . even the ocean temperatures were not at their usual springtime lows.
The beaches are filled with families enjoying the day—not filled like it will be in summer, but there are certainly a lot of people visiting. The action in the surf seems to follow a consistent theme—fathers with little kids walking into the water and older kids with skimboards and lots of energy jumping into the surf.
Meanwhile the mothers appear to be camped out at the base of the dune, keeping one eye on the action and the other in a book.
It really highlights what a great place for families of all kinds the Outer Banks is. Other resort areas have glitz and glamor—and, yes, there is some glitz here and there on the Outer Banks, but what this area is really about is time with family.
So today is Mother’s Day and it’s a great day to celebrate moms everywhere, and Sunday, June 19 is Father’s Day, but on the Outer Banks maybe we should have a Family Day and say that it’s a year long celebration.
