It’s May, the Outer Banks weather is definitely warming up, more folks are visiting and the things to do calendar is getting full

Especially on weekends, there is something to do every day and sometimes a couple of things to do. This coming weekend—May 6 and 7—is no exception.

The Run for the Roses, the Kentucky Derby, will run for the 143rd time the Saturday. Post time is 6:34 and the Elizabethan Gardens will be ready with their first Annual Kentucky Derby Party.

A benefit for the Elizabethan Gardens, Beach Food Pantry and Dare Education Foundation, this is an all day affair with fancy hats, fancy clothes and fancy food from Lone Cedar Café, Café Lachine and the Salt Box Cafe.

One day later, the New York Gilbert and Sullivan Players bring HMS Pinafore to the Outer Banks. Sponsored by the Don and Catharine Bryan Cultural Series, the NYGSP were here two years ago performing the Pirates of Penzance and it was outstanding.

The performance will be at First Flight High School which has an outstanding stage that is able to handle the requirements of a major touring company.

The following Saturday its the grand opening of Dowdy’s Park in Nags Head. The park has been open for about a month, but this is the GRAND OPENING and will include the Dare County Arts Council’s annual tribute to young creativity—Artrageous.

The way to start the day on that Saturday is running in the Nags Head Woods 5K. Sort of the grandfather of all Outer Banks Races, the first race was in 1984. It’s a beautiful course on a hard packed dirt road.

The following weekend is a musical lover’s delight with Shred Fest featuring Southern Culture on the Skids on Saturday at the Nags Head Event Site. On Sunday, just a quick trip up the road to Corolla, it’s the Mustang Music Spring Jam with two stages and continuous music all day long.
