There was a basketball game of sorts at the First Flight High School Sunday afternoon. We say “of sorts” because the Harlem Ambassadors came to town to face-off against the local Scalawags made up of teachers and various people from the community, none of whom play basketball for a living.
It was fun…and for a good cause…the Dare Education Foundation. The DEF supports a number of programs for Dare County educators including operating two affordable housing units for teachers.
So the cause was good, if the basketball a bit suspect.
There were two referees on hand although there wasn’t much evidence that they were calling any fouls. Actually there was no evidence that they were calling fouls, because they didn’t. They did call one at the end of the game, but only because the Ambassador’s sole female player was dragging one of the Scalawags across the floor.
The gym was packed and a lot of the seats were occupied by kids and the Ambassadors get a lot of credit and kudos for how well they related to the kids and how much fun they made the whole event.
This was the third year the Ambassadors have visited the Outer Banks and indications are they’ll be back again next year, although that still has to be confirmed.
