This weekend is sort of the calm before the storm—not a bad storm, just a storm of activity. It’s almost as though now that summer is gone, everyone is taking a deep breath before jumping into a full fall schedule of events.

Next weekend really kicks things off with a tennis tournament—the Outer Banks Charity Classic, the Outer Banks Triathlon, the Kitty Hawk Kites Kayak Fishing Tournament and the ESA surf competition at Jennette’s Pier.

It’s almost exhausting just listing all of that out—and that doesn’t include the Outer Banks Bluegrass Festival the following weekend.

The Charity Classic, September 15-18, almost seems to get lost in the shuffle, and that’s really too bad. This is the 14th Annual Classic and the proceeds go to a really good cause—Dare Hospice, which is a county agency that works with families and individuals at a time when the need is often greatest.

It’s a four day event o-sponsored by the Outer Banks Visitors Bureau, Duck Woods Country Club, the Westside Athletic Club, Pine Island Racquet & Fitness Club, and Corolla Light Resort.

Another event that’s newer to the fall event schedule is the Kitty Hawk Kites Kayak Fishing Tournament. It’s a catch, take a picture and release tournament and all fishing is done from kayaks. Last year the fishing was a little bit slow, but all reports said competitors had a great time anyway. That will be next Saturday, September 17. There’s still time to register for that one.
