Chowder cookoff, part of the Outer Banks Taste of the Beach.

With February winding down and hopefully the cold weather with it, it’s time to look for to spring and and upcoming Outer Banks events . . . and there’s a lot of them.

We can’t possibly list them all, so we picked some highlights of upcoming things to do—events that look interesting or we’ve had a chance to participate in.

A couple of snapshot observations about upcoming events.

The History of North Carolina Surfing at Jennette’s Pier on Wednesday, March 9 is new, but that looks really interesting. It’s free, too.

In March the big two events are Mike Kelly’s St. Patrick’s Day Parade, March 13 this year and Taste of the Beach, March 17-20.

If there is a parade that has more fun than Kelly’s St. Patrick’s Day Parade, it hasn’t been found yet. A high point of Outer Banks spring life for 27 years.

The Taste of the Beach is as much a tour of the Outer Banks as it is a chance to learn just how good Outer Banks chefs are. Two highlights in particular worth checking out are the Outer Banks Annual Chowder Cookoff at Southern Shores Crossing in Southern Shores and Grand Tasting & Bartenders Bubbly Bash—with the Bubbly Bash new this year.

There are also some great races coming up—the Flying Tiger Half Marathon is a weekend of fitness and races and the OBX Duathlon has been gaining popularity as a challenging but fun race.
