The OBX Wedding Fest held Sunday made for a nice mini wedding expo here on the Outer Banks. The big Wedding Expo will be happening next year—March 7 and 8—but the Wedding Fest was a nice preview.

Over the years the Outer Banks has become one of the most popular destinations for a wedding. The Expo coming up in March gives couples a chance to meet with just about everybody on the Outer Banks who is involved in putting a wedding on.

It’s a great opportunity to get a lot of information, but it can be a bit overwhelming.

Wedding Expo Gives Couples and Vendors Chance to Talk

The Wedding Expo, held at Kitty Hawk Pier and Jennette’s Pier this year,, is a lot more laid back. Fewer vendors are on hand and there are not nearly as many couples looking for information. The vendors we spoke to felt strongly that the Expo gave them a chance to really get to know some of the couples they met.

Going to any of the Outer Banks Wedding Association events always makes for an interesting day.

There are always a couple restaurants on hand to talk about their catering services. For the Wedding Fest it was not nearly as many as we see at the Expo. That’s probably a staffing issue. It’s still peak season for local restaurant and there simply in not enough personnel to send to an outside event.

Nonetheless there were a couple of restaurants on hand—Village Tavern in Duck, Trio in Kitty Hawk, Basnight’s Lone Cedar Cafe and Steamers were all there. And they were busy.

A very noticeable difference with the event held at Kitty Hawk  and Jennette’s Piers was alcohol could be served. The annual Expo is held at First Flight High School—the only place on the Outer Banks big enough for it. Alcohol, however,l cannot be consumed on school property.

It is important to note that, although weddings continue to be the majority of what was being discussed, a significant portion of inquiries focuses on events—corporate retreats, family reunions, that type of activity.
