As annual events go the Kentucky Derby is steeped in tradition—not the least of which there is a race at some point.

Not everyone, though, gets to go to Churchill Downs, but that doesn’t mean the race and some if its traditions can only be found by traveling to Kentucky.

On the Outer Banks a trip to the Elizabethan Gardens in Manteo is all it takes.

The 2nd Annual Kentucky Derby Run For the Roses Party is coming up next Saturday, May 5.

Last years inaugural party was a great time and this year looks to be even better.

Held on the Great Lawn of the Gardens, it is a day of genteel images mixed with great food, elegantly dressed guests, mint juleps—of course—and a horse race.

Last year the facade of genteel living took a bit of a hit as the horsed charged down the final stretch but it was great fun.

There are, of course, Derby Hat Contests—what would the Kentucky Derby be without hats of the most distinguished couture. Prizes awarded for most Creative, Most Colorful and Best Overall.

It’s a great time with the event kicking off at 3:00 p.m.

And the best part is it benefits three very worthy local organizations: The Elizabethan Gardens, Beach Food Pantry and Dare Education Foundation.
