The Outer Banks has a lot going for it in the summer—great beaches, amazing weather, beautiful ocean and it’s a great place to go for a run. Because of that, there are a lot of races scheduled all summer; so many that we can’t list them all, so here’s a partial list to get things going.
Storm the Beach is the tough one and that’s coming next Sunday, June 14 at Jennette’s Pier in Nags Head. Sponsored by Outer Banks Sporting Events, the same folks that do the Outer Banks Marathon, this is a race for the physically fit and need to be challenged. There’s no distance given, but this isn’t about distance. It’s all about, as the website says: “Run, crawl, jump, carry endure.”
After the challenge of Storm the Beach, it gets a little easier, although the June 17 Runcations Sunrise 5K is a beach run. There’s also a Children’s Crab Crawl after the race. That’s also at Jennette’s Pier.
One week later also at Jennette’s Pier and also a beach run, the Sunset Spectacular 5k & Carolina Pig Pickin’ kicked off at 6:30 p.m. The race fee includes Carolina style pork bbq with all the fixin’s.
That should get runners through the month of June. July has a lot of races coming up as well, including the Brindley Beach Lighthouse 5K. The course goes through Corolla Village, Corolla Light and the Whalehead Club. It’s a great way to start the day. It’s a flat course, easy to navigate and very pretty. Every Wednesday starting July 15 through August 26.
