Shine your spats and practice your passwords, the Speakeasy is coming to the Outer Banks. Tomorrow night at the Secret Garden in Kill Devil Hills, in fact.
It’s actually a fundraiser for the Elizabethan Gardens, but let’s not ruin the fun of a night of almost illicit fun.
Just what is the Speakeasy?
This one looks to be a lot of fun. Drinks, heavy appetizers, dessert bar, a silent auction and probably some things we didn’t list. Bathtub gin? Who knows. Moonshine from Buffalo City? With any luck…yes.
Music will be from Ruth Wyand. Ruth is as fine a guitar player as can be found anywhere. She is comfortable playing in almost any style, so there’s a good chance we’ll get a touch of flapper music from her.
Speakeasy for a Good Cause
The Elizabethan Gardens on Roanoke Island are ten acres of some of the most beautiful formal gardens imaginable. The rose garden is world famous; the statuary is classic Italian and a number of experts who have examined them think they may have come from 15th or 16th Italy.
The path that wanders along the circumference of the gardens passes under towering pines and live oak. It offers stunning vistas of Albemarle Sound.
Those stunning vistas have come at a cost. It’s possible that some of the funds raised at the Speakeasy will go to shore up the north end of the Gardens where the sound is threatening the grounds.
There is always something new happening a the Elizabethan Gardens, which makes it worth a visit at any time of the year. One of the governing principals of the horticulture of the site is to have something in bloom at all times.
It’s that type of thought that goes into what the Gardens are all about that make them such a local treasure and will bring out the zoot suits tomorrow night.
There is always as reason dress up and have fun on the Outer Banks. Stay a week or two in a Brindley Beach Vacations home and see what it’s all about.
