An empty parking lot and closed Kmart will soon become a Target.

It is now officially official. The Kmart store in Kill Devil Hills that closed in March will become a Target Store.

The news came out last week in a Facebook post from the local business that put the deal together. Official word, thought, came just the other day from Target with a spokesperson writing, “I can confirm Target has plans to open a store in Kill Devil Hills. We’re excited to bring an easy, safe and convenient shopping experience to new guests in the community with this new Target store. Located at 1091 N. Croatan Hwy, the store will be approximately 80,000 square feet. As we get closer to opening the store, we’ll have more specific details to share – including how the shopping experience will be tailored to serve local guests and the grand opening date.”

The store opened in 1992 and was the first big box retailer on the Outer Banks. As its parent company Sears and then Transformco has struggled through bankruptcy its fate was sealed and its closing became inevitable.

Target Plans for the Site

The store is located on 14 acres. Target has indicated that they will demolish the building and create a new shopping experience.

Locally discussion centered around using the location as a community space that could be used for shows, art and other activities. However, the expense of acquiring  14 acres in the heart of Kill Devil Hills made that unlikely.

Although Kmart enjoyed early success on the Outer Banks, it struggled to compete with Walmart when it opened. As a wider selection of quality discount retailers came to the Outer Banks, the store continued to struggle.

That’s the big news from the Outer Banks, but there are so many stories to tell that we can’t get to all of them. Spend a little time with us at Brindley Beach Vacations and see what a fascinating place to live, work and visit the Outer Banks can be.
