Here’s a local piece of news that’s fun to report. The First Flight High School Varsity basketball team set a North Carolina record for three-point shots hitting 335 three pointers from behind the arc.

Ending the season with a 17-10 record, the Nighthawks shattered the old record that was set last year. Cherokee High School set the record last year with 330 three-pointer, but it took them 29 games to do it. If the Nighthawks had played 29 games, shooting at their record-setting pace they would have sunk 360 triples.

Shooting threes doesn’t always guarantee a win. In December they set another state record for three-point shots, finding the hoop 28 times from beyond the arc in a 120-107 loss to Bertie County.

A scary thought for FFHS opponents for the next few years—the leading three point scorer on the squad was Dylan Blake who dropped in 106 three-point shots, ranking him 39th in the nation.

The FFHS basketball team wasn’t the only team making history this year. The men’s soccer team won the state title after getting to the state finals the past three years.

First Flight High School is in Kill Devil Hills and is consistently rated as one of the better North Carolina schools.
