What is America 250?

America 250 commemorates the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, signed July 4, 1776. While still exceptionally young, our country has achieved incredible feats, some of which occurred right here in the Outer Banks, including the first powered flight, the creation of the first life-saving station, and the establishment of the first English settlement on Roanoke Island.

What American Revolutionary War Events Took Place in the Outer Banks?

Most ground battles of the Revolutionary War took place farther inland near the Cape Fear River. However, with its maritime history and waterway access, the Outer Banks was the site of several Naval encounters throughout the war. Most consisted of the seizure of British supplies, like the Nov. 1776 or Sept. 1780 encounters with loyalists and British brigs. Near the Roanoke Inlet, local militias regularly fought to keep the British from accessing this prime supply chain port.

On Hatteras Island, at the Currituck Inlet, a privateer named Captain John Goodrich managed to burn two British vessels before escaping on November 15, 1778.

The shallow waters and shifting sands of the Outer Banks made it difficult for British forces to navigate, giving the Patriots a great home-field advantage that they used to pillage and harass the British at every opportunity.

How Long Are People Celebrating America 250?

America 250 is a year-long celebration. While it commemorates July 4th, places like the Outer Banks have a full roster of events already underway and set to span the year as more are added.

What American Revolutionary Historic Sites Are in the Outer Banks?

While there are no Revolutionary War historic sites directly on the Outer Banks, if you’re up for a short drive, you can reach a few notable areas, including:

  • Moores Creek National Battlefield: Located near Wilmington, NC – Loyalists soundly defeated British troops in February 1776, preventing them from pushing further south.
  • Brunswick Town/Fort Anderson State Historic Site: Brunswick County – Ruins of a town destroyed by British forces
  • Edenton State Historic Site: Edenton, NC – Site of female-led protest known as the Edenton Tea Party, located at the James Iredell House
  • Halifax State Historic Site: Halifax, NC – Site where a colony was first directed to vote for Independence.

Why Should I Celebrate America 250?

America 250 isn’t just about looking back at our history; it’s about celebrating what holds us together today. At its core, our country has always been defined by its people: dreamers, innovators, fiercely independent hopefuls who work hard every day.

Celebrating America 250 is a chance to pause and appreciate that. It’s also about enjoying the places that shape our lives and experiences—wide stretches of coastline, quiet seaside villages, national parks, and open water that remind us how much there is to explore and protect. Here in the Outer Banks, surrounded by history and natural beauty, it’s a reminder that this story is still unfolding and we’re all part of it.
