It looks as though the weather is finally going to cooperate on the Outer Banks and the 44th Annual Wright Kite Festival at the Wright Brothers Memorial is a go for this weekend.
Sponsored by Kitty Hawk Kites, the Wright Kite Festival is all about kites, kite flying and families.
Visually there is nothing quite like it. Look for the sky to be be filled with huge kites for every description—giant deltas, parafoils, giant pandas, giant squid and much, much more. These are monster kites, 12’ across and more, some of the larger animals stretching 100’ across the sky.
It’s not just the single line demo kites that will fill the air. At ground level, there are stunt kite demonstrations, and they are a blast.
Looking for a real challenge? Try flying a quad line stunt kite. It takes a little getting use to but once the technique is mastered, the kite do tricks unimaginable with a two line kite.
Of course, just flying a regular two-line stunt kite is a blast as well, so don’t pass up that chance. Better yet, up the game and try you hand at a power kite.
Power kites are frameless kites that use baffles for lift. The power they generate is extraordinary. To give a bit of reference to how much power we’re talking about, a paraglider is a gigantic frameless kite filling its baffles to generate lift.
When Kitty Hawk Kites put on an event, they always put a lot of focus on kids and the Wright Kite Festival is no exception. Look for hundreds of sled kites to fill the sky—well, sky close to the ground—with the kites children make themselves.

Stunt Kite Demos will take place each hour on the hour.
