There are butterflies on the north wall of the Kitty Hawk Super Wings. They weren’t there just a little while ago. But now they’re there—huge butterflies taking up wholes section of the wall.
The butterflies are the creation of Kennedy Fletcher, a Buxton artists, who according to her is almost an accidental artist. She painted her first butterfly mural for her grandmother who was in the hospital when the mural was painted. People saw it, liked it and suddenly they wanted Kennedy to paint more murals.
Creating art as large as what has been painted on the wall of the Super Wings takes more than one person and this was truly a community project. In an Outer Banks Voice article Kennedy talks about how her art teacher from Cape Hatteras Secondary School gave her a hand.
She also talks about random people who stopped by—like the Virginia Beach artist who happened upon the work and asked if she could help. Or—and they may be our favorite—the young girl whose dad said she was an artist and could she help.
Kennedy said yes, the girl stopped by later that day and when she was done, she was paid—because it was important for that young girl to know her worth.
One of the distinctive features of the butterflies are they are interactive. There’s a little gap between the wings. Stand between theme and it seems as though suddenly beautiful wings have sprouted from your back.
That interactive aspect of the butterflies is a feature of much for Kennedy’s work.
According to owner of Super Wings Manny Galosa, he wanted a mural on that north wall, but something very different than the mural of the Wright Brothers flight on his south wall.
It looks as though he got what he was looking for. Both murals are wonderful art, but they are so very different.
