The holiday season is officially with us here on the Outer Banks.

For our Jewish friends it began last weekend. Chanukah fell very early this year, beginning on Monday, November 29. But for most people the holiday season begins when Santa shows up…and he’s been everywhere on the Outer Banks the past couple of days.

We saw him first when he made an appearance on Friday night at the annual Manteo Christmas celebration and tree lighting. Then he traveled the streets of the town in the parade today.

Most recently we saw the jolly elf at the Duck Village Green, greeting kids and having his picture taken with them. He is being a little bit careful this year, and the kids, instead of sitting on his lap and whispering to him there Christmas wish list, the list is being written out and handed to him.

Who knows—maybe it will help some of the kids hone their writing skills.

The Manteo tree lighting with its 40 year tradition—give or take a year—is really amazing. But for shear fun and something very different, the Town of Duck takes the cake.

In a tribute to village heritage going back some 50 years or more, town stacks crab pots on the village green, tops the stack with duck, and string Christmas lights all over it. It is, as billed, a crab pot tree lighting.

The atmosphere is pure holiday. Singers from the First Flight High School chorus were on hand for Christmas carols. There was music from Just Playing Dixieland, the musicians playing much more than Dixieland for the day’s entertainment. And free coffee and real hot chocolate with crumb cake courtesy of Treehouse Coffee in Duck.

It was as close to a perfect way to begin the holiday season as there could be.

The holidays truly are wonderful on the Outer Banks. Discover why it is so wonderful and stop by for a stay in a Brindley Beach Vacations home.
