We didn’t dodge the winter storm that walloping the rest of the East Coast after all. Right now it’s just rain, but the forecast has consistently been calling for freezing rain tomorrow. That’s about as bad as it gets.

The wind has been steadily picking up, the temperature is dropping, so, yep, tomorrow is not going to be a good day.

But yesterday and this morning were wonderful, so we’ll write about that instead.

The Atlantic Ocean was almost like a lake this morning. It’s nighttime right now, so we can’t see the surf from the window, but the forecast calls for 9’ breakers in the surf zone and there’s not reason to doubt that.

But this morning it was mild and perfect for a walk along the beach. There was some very interesting driftwood. What looked to be the remnants of shipwreck had washed up on the Southern Shores beach. A big piece of wood, worm eaten with deep furrows from years in the sea, there were still some iron bolts showing in it. Hard to say exactly what it was, but one thing it was not was a piling from a pier.

Yesterday, Wednesday, the sun was out. A perfect day for a quick walk around Sandy Run Park in Kitty Hawk. There are always birds flitting through the trees there, an occasional squirrel will come out. In the summer, it is the place to go to see yellow-bellied sliders and an occasional snapping turtle.

But this time of the year it’s mostly yellow-rumped warblers, North Carolina Chickadees, cardinals and an occasional Carolina wren.

It’s fascinating watching the birds. It’s a great place to take a camera. Cellphone cameras kind of work, but the common birds at this time of the year are small and quick, but cellphone cameras don’t zoom that fast.

Still any excuse to be outside on the Outer Banks on a nice day will do.

It can be exciting in the winter on the Outer Banks. Exciting any time of the year really. Check out the excitement for yourself. Our Brindley Beach Vacations homes are perfect for a week or two of exploring.
