A bit chilly to be a summer day, but otherwise that’s what it felt like on the beach in Kitty Hawk today. The sun was out and got a clot in the sky. The sand was warm beneath bare feet and there were even a couple of surfers trying their luck on two foot waves.

The surfers weren’t the only ones in the water. There were three or four teenager boy, having a great time with skim boards.

It was a wonderful reminder of how glorious summer is on the Outer Baks.

Not that it was a summer day. The surfers were wearing wetsuits and for good reason. The ocean temperature was in the low 60s, about the same as the air temperature.

But with that bright sunshine and some people on the beach it was a reminder of things to come.

This is a wonderful time to be on the Outer Baks. Walking the beach this morning, there were just a few people strolling by. Plenty of dogs, as well. There were a couple of peon collecting something as they walked long the high tide line. Probably sea glass, but sometimes there are some truly beautiful shells mixed in as well.

The brown pelicans were putting on quite a show, gliding just inches above the water, jut in back of the breaking waves of the surf zone. Sandpipers and willets would run to the edge of the breaking waves then run back, pecking into the sand in each of a meal.

The beach homes are beginning to fill up. Quite a number of them had folks sitting out on a porch or deck, soaking in the sun and enjoying the view.

Maybe the way to think about a day like to day is as an appetizer, something to whet the appetite for what is to come.

The summer is looking pretty close to booked, but there still may be a few possibilities left. Check out our Brindley Beach Vacations availability and make that reservation today. And don’t forget, the fall is spectacular on the Outer Banks.
