It’s back. the Wright Kite Festival is back and it looks as though it’s going to be as good as it ever was.

After taking a year off for COVID, the Kitty Hawk Kites annual event is once again happening at the Wright Brothers National Memorial in Kill Devil Hills.

It is a wonderful event and perfect for the whole family.

As the name implies, the Wright Kite Festival is all about kites and kite flying.

The sky will be filled with huge kites…it could almost be ok to call them monster kites. Cows, squid, bears, ten and fifteen feet across hovering above the ground.

For older kids…ok, parents too… there are stunt kites. There hasn’t been a list published of who will be on hand, but there is always a power kite demonstration.

Power kites are basically large airfoils. When the baffles fill with air, the pull on them is astonishing, and makes for a really fun time.

Kids will have a great time as well.

Older kids will want to try their hand at stunt kites. The two line deltas are a blast to fly and with an experienced instructor on hand, they’ll pick it up quickly. And there’s no reason why they can’t try a power kite. Might have to keep one hand on them, but the look of wonder on a child’s face when they realize the power of the wind is memorable.

For the youngest kids, Kitty Hawk Kites has always brings their kite making kits—and yes the kites will fly. They also always have face painting available.

It is really a wonderful time for the whole family.

A quick summation of Tropical Storm Elsa for those who are curious. It was here, then gone. We did get about an hour of hard rain and strong winds. That’s it. Nod damage, no flooding…simply here and gone.
