When you’re looking for an exceptionally beautiful and historic destination to mark an amazing vacation the Outer Banks of North Carolina has a little something for everyone. Gorgeous coastlines, sandy beaches, and charming small-town feel make this a destination that calls equally to those who love to get out on the waves as those who prefer to spend time shopping unique boutique stores and soaking up the sun from the comfort of an outdoor lounger. Whatever your vacation style, you’ll want to make the most of opportunities to visit a gorgeous lighthouse or two while you’re here. Of all the visits available, making time for Cape Hatteras Lighthouse on the itinerary is a must. Pay homage to the rich maritime history of the Outer Banks while earning yourself an amazing vantage point on this breathtaking destination too.

Climb History, Discover the Beauty of Today

Located at 46368 Lighthouse Road in Buxton, the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse is one of three located in the Cape Hatteras National Seashore but has earned the unmistakable title as the tallest of them all. Stretching 2018-feet into the air, the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse is as impressive as it is hard to miss. It’s diagonal black and white stripes make for a beautiful contrast against the pines and water that stand behind it. Photographers have long loved this lighthouse for its striking façade and visitors may find it feels familiar to be here after seeing this iconic symbol of the Outer Banks on so many promotional brochures.

Planning Your Visit

Built in 1870, the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse includes a convenient visitor center and today is open to the public between April and Columbus Day for those ambitious travelers that are willing to take the 257-step trek from ground to top. While the journey may be taxing, the view is worth the effort. Sweeping vistas await as a bird’s eye view of the sand and sea below is yours for the taking once you’ve made your way up the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse. Visitors arriving with children should take special note that there is a 42” height requirement to scale climb the lighthouse. June through September visitors will want to make special note of the Full Moon Tours that are available for those looking for a more romantic take on a trip up the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse.
