April is National Kite Month. Maybe something not everyone knows, but it makes sense since April tends to be a windy month.

With that in mind, Kitty Hawk Kites is holding a Celebrate National Kite Month event at Jockey’s Ridge State Park in Nags Head on Friday and Saturday from 10a.m. to 4 p.m. both days.

Friday will probably be the better day for kite flying. There should be a mix of sun and clouds and winds are forecast to be around 8-10 mph with slightly stronger gusts. That’s pretty good kite flying weather.

If those conditions hold, the top of Jockey’s Ridge will be spectacular with an array of huge kites of every description. Squid kites, octopus kites, fish kites, gigantic parafoils…when the folks at Kitty Hawk Kites get a chance to decorate the sky, they hold nothing back.

There will also be some stunt kite demonstrations and lessons. This is a great time to try something new and different. For kite flyers who have flown two line stunt kites, be sure to try out a quad line. It takes a little getting use to, but what you can do with four lines instead of two is amazing.

Saturday should be a fun day. That’s the day of the Easter Egg hunt.

The Easter Bunny will be on hand as well, of course. That will be at the Kitty Hawk Kites store in Nags Head.

And there is still the kite flying demonstration across the street at Jockey’s Ridge.

Saturday early will probably be a bit better than later in the day. There is an increasing chance of showers in the afternoon. The winds may be a bit light in the morning for kite flying, but give it a shot.

The Outer Banks always seems to have something special happening. Be sure to experience the fun personally. Plan your visit to the Outer Banks and be sure to stay in on of our many Brindley Beach Vacations homes.
