Indoor Activities OBX Families Can Actually Use
There are tons of fun things to do on the OBX, but to make planning easy, we’ve narrowed it down to our top 10 recommendations. Check them out and never worry about an incoming storm ruining the plans again!
1. North Carolina Aquarium on Roanoke Island
The North Carolina Aquarium on Roanoke Island is one of the most complete indoor stops in the area, especially for younger kids who need something interactive to keep them entertained. Here, they can watch daily animal feedings, explore the large shark tank, and spend time at the touch pools. It’s a full-on sensory experience that all ages will love.
- Address: 374 Airport Rd, Manteo, NC
- Hours: Typically 9 AM – 5 PM (check seasonal updates)
- Admission:
- Adults (13–61): $15.00
- Children (3–12): $13.00
- Seniors (62+): $14.00
- Ages 2 and under: Free
- Note: Timed entry reservations are required and can sell out in advance
2. Graveyard of the Atlantic Museum
The Graveyard of the Atlantic Museum focuses on real shipwrecks off the Outer Banks coast, including artifacts recovered from legendary pirate Blackbeard’s ship! Stop by the front desk and ask about the scavenger hunt (those who complete it are rewarded with a fun surprise!) or let the little ones color and make ocean-themed art in the Maritime Crafts area just off the lobby.
- Address: 59200 Museum Dr, Hatteras, NC
- Hours: 10 AM – 4 PM (seasonal variation)
- Admission: Free
- What to do: View shipwreck artifacts, detailed models, and exhibits on coastal rescues and maritime history
3. Cape Hatteras Escape Rooms
Escape rooms test your puzzle-solving abilities with themed rooms and hidden clues you have to work through before the timer runs out. On Hatteras Island, there are two exciting locations to choose from, one in Frisco and one in Avon. Rooms range from tales of a deranged lighthouse keeper to Spanish Flu outbreaks, with five unique stories from which to choose.
- Address: Frisco: 50840 North Carolina Hwy 12 | Avon: 41056 North Carolina Hwy 12
- Hours: By reservation
- Pricing: $35
- Capacity: 2-12 participants per room
4. Destination Fun Laser Tag (Nags Head)
Destination Fun is an indoor entertainment center with a laser tag arena, 50+ arcade games, and indoor bumper cars. It’s a traditional arcade setup—you buy a game card, put money on it, and then you’re free to play whatever you like. Tickets go straight to your game card and can be redeemed for fun prizes.
- Address: 1217 S Croatan Hwy, Kill Devil Hills, NC
- Hours: Daily 9 AM – 9 PM
- Pricing: Activity pricing varies. You pre-load a game card upon arrival.
5. OBX Bowling Center
The OBX Bowling Center offers a simple way to spend a few hours. No frills, just good old family-friendly competition. The center features 24 lanes, plus an arcade area, café, and bar.

6. Wright Brothers National Memorial
The indoor visitor center at the Wright Brothers National Memorial walks through how the first powered flight actually happened, with full-scale replicas of the 1903 flyer, original tools, and exhibits that break down the mechanics of flight in a way kids can follow. Even in rain, the indoor exhibits alone are worth the stop.
- Address: 1000 N Croatan Hwy, Kill Devil Hills, NC
- Hours: Daily, 9 AM – 5 PM
- Admission: $10 Standard Pass
7. Shopping in Nags Head, Corolla, and Kitty Hawk
Shopping is one of the easiest ways to fill gaps on a rainy day, especially if you're staying in the central OBX. Some of our favorite spots are:
- Hours: Monday – Saturday 10 AM – 6 PM | Sunday 11 AM – 5 PM
- Address: 7100 S Croatan Hwy, Nags Head, NC

- Address: 1803 N Croatan Hwy, Kill Devil Hills, NC
9. OBX Lighthouses
The OBX is home to several lighthouses, and each one is full of history. While climbing to the top may not be an option during a heavy shower, exploring the keeper’s house or the visitor’s centers is a great way to spend a rainy day.

- Bodie Island Lighthouse: Self-guided climb | Same-day online tickets required
- Roanoke Marshes Lighthouse: Interior Exhibits open | Free walk-in museum
- Cape Hatteras Lighthouse: Closed for 2026 for restoration, but the Hatteras Island Visitor Center and Museum of the Sea are nearby and open to the public

10. Stay In and Use Your Rental Amenities
Your Brindley Beach Vacation Rental is full of amenities that make spending time inside feel like the main event. Challenge each other to a board game play-off or round of Uno or Phase 10, watch a movie together, or have a cooking competition in the fully equipped kitchen. Some homes even have game rooms with pool tables or arcade-style games.
If you want a quieter moment, the balconies and covered areas let you watch storms roll in as you enjoy a good book or even an afternoon nap in the salt air breeze. With enough space for everyone to enjoy, you can each pass the time however you’d like.

Where to Go Based on Where You’re Staying
Nags Head / Kill Devil Hills
Stay central and keep driving minimal. You can move between the Wright Brothers site, OBX Bowling Center, Destination Fun, and RC Theatres within a short stretch along Croatan Highway.
Hatteras Island
Stick close to NC-12 and pair the Graveyard of the Atlantic Museum with Hatteras escape rooms.
Northern Beaches (Corolla area)
Focus on indoor stops like Duck Waterfront Shops and Timbuck II Shopping Village in Corolla, and quick in-and-out retail stops rather than longer drives south.
Plan a Full Rainy-Day Itinerary
If the weather sticks around all day, it helps to group stops that are close together so you’re not constantly getting in and out of the car in the rain.
Example Nags Head Area Itinerary
- Morning: North Carolina Aquarium
- Lunch: Blue Moon Beach Grill (20 minutes from aquarium)
- Early afternoon: OBX Bowling Center (6 minutes from lunch)
- Late afternoon: Outlet Nags Head (9 minutes from bowling)
- Evening: Back at your rental for games or a movie (Nags Head vacation rentals)

Yes. The museum and Hatteras escape rooms are both located directly on the island, so you don’t need to drive north in poor conditions.
Do you need reservations for indoor activities in the Outer Banks?
For escape rooms, yes—book ahead. For bowling and museums, walk-ins are common, but wait times can increase during extended periods of bad weather.
